Web design / Suffolk / Est. for businesses that make, move and serve
Web design
Suffolk.
Hardline is an independent design studio creating bespoke website designs tailored to Suffolk businesses. No templates, no fluff. Sites that load fast, say what you do and bring in work.

01 / The short version
Built for Suffolk business, not for awards.
Suffolk's economy is not one thing. It is the Port of Felixstowe and the freight forwarders, hauliers and warehouses that feed it. It is the solicitors, engineers and logistics firms of Ipswich, and the new studios and start-ups that moved onto the regenerated waterfront. It is brewers and food producers around Bury St Edmunds, silk weavers in Sudbury, manufacturers along the A14 at Stowmarket, and technical firms in Haverhill working with the Cambridge economy next door.
Most of those businesses sell on expertise. Their customers are careful, they compare suppliers, and they need specific information before they get in touch. A typical template website gives them a stock photo and a slogan. We give them the answers.
We are a small design studio. You talk to the people who plan, design and build your site, from the first call to the day it goes live. We work across the county and further into Norfolk and Essex, on site where it helps and on video calls where it does not.
02 / Services
What we do
Web design
A website designed around the questions your customers actually ask, not a theme with your logo dropped in.
02Website redesign
A redesign should keep what already works. We audit first, so the new site does not throw away years of search history.
03E-commerce websites
Online shops for Suffolk producers, makers and independent retailers, from twenty products to a few thousand.
04WordPress development
WordPress built lean: a custom theme, a short plugin list and an editor your staff can use without breaking the layout.
05SEO for new websites
Search is planned into the site from the first page plan, not bolted on after launch.
06Landing pages
One page, one job. Built for a campaign, a recruitment drive or a launch, and measured on what it produces.
07Hosting and maintenance
Hosting, updates, backups and small changes, handled each month so the site keeps working after launch.
08Accessibility audits
A practical audit against WCAG 2.2, tested by hand with a keyboard and screen reader, with fixes listed in priority order.
03 / Approach
How we work
1. Discovery
We start by learning the business: who your customers are, what they ask before they buy, who you lose work to and why. For a freight forwarder in Felixstowe that might be transit times and customs support. For a Bury St Edmunds restaurant it is the menu, the opening hours and whether you can book for Saturday. This shapes everything else.
2. Page plan and keywords
Next we write a page plan. Every page has one job and one main search phrase. We look at what people in Suffolk actually search for, which pages of your competitors rank, and where the gaps are. This is where most of the SEO setup happens, long before anything is designed.
3. Design
Layouts are designed mobile first, with real copy. Responsive design is not an afterthought: most local searches happen on a phone, often in a car park or on a building site. We design for that, then scale up to desktop.
4. Build
Our web developers build lean sites with very little JavaScript, so pages are fast on rural broadband and patchy coastal signal. Where you want to edit content yourself, we set up a simple editor or a carefully built WordPress theme. Hosting is fast, secure and in your name.
5. Launch and look after
Redirects from old pages, Search Console, analytics, a Google Business Profile check and a recorded training session. After launch we offer web hosting, maintenance and small monthly updates if you want them, on a rolling plan.

04 / Why a small studio
No account managers. No hand-offs.
Larger web design companies often pass your project between a salesperson, a project manager, a designer and a developer. Details get lost. With us, the person you meet is the person who designs and builds the site.
That keeps costs sensible for small businesses and means decisions happen quickly. It also means we turn down work we are not the right fit for, and we will tell you if a cheaper option would serve you better.
05 / Where
Web design across Suffolk
Every town here has a different economy. We write area pages that say something real about each one, and we build sites that speak to the customers each business actually has.
Ipswich
From the Wet Dock to Ransomes Europark and Martlesham: websites for the county town's professional firms, engineers, studios and waterfront businesses.
→Bury St Edmunds
Websites for Bury St Edmunds shops, restaurants, professional firms and the businesses on Suffolk Business Park at the A14.
→Sudbury
Websites for Sudbury's makers, silk weavers, shops and visitor businesses, written to sell craft and quality to buyers who are not local.
→Woodbridge
Websites for Woodbridge's independent shops, riverside hospitality, marine trades and professional firms.
→Stowmarket
Websites for Mid Suffolk manufacturers, food producers, trades and the logistics firms arriving on the A14 at Stowmarket.
→Haverhill
Websites for Haverhill's manufacturers, science-led firms and local businesses on the Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire border.
→Felixstowe
Websites for the freight forwarders, hauliers, customs agents and port services around the UK's largest container port.
+Everywhere else
Lowestoft, Beccles, Newmarket, Hadleigh, Framlingham, Aldeburgh and across the border into north Essex and south Norfolk.
06 / Sectors
Who we design for
Logistics and freight
Freight forwarders, customs agents, hauliers and warehousing firms around Felixstowe and Ipswich. Sites that explain services precisely, make quotes easy to request and help with constant driver and warehouse recruitment.
Manufacturing and engineering
Precision engineers, fabricators, packaging and food manufacturers across Mid Suffolk, Haverhill and the Ipswich estates. Capability pages for technical buyers, not brochure copy.
Creative and digital businesses
Studios, agencies, makers and designers, many based around the Ipswich waterfront, Woodbridge and the Stour Valley. Portfolio sites that let the work speak, with examples organised the way clients look for them.
Professional services
Solicitors, accountants, architects, surveyors and consultants in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Woodbridge. Calm, credible sites that explain specialisms and convert careful readers.
Food, drink and hospitality
Breweries, producers, farm shops, restaurants and guest houses, from Bury to the coast. Menus, bookings and online shops that work on a phone.
07 / Standards
What every site gets
Speed
Lean code, compressed images, no heavy page builders. Built to load quickly on mobile data and rural broadband, and tested before launch.
Search basics
Titles, descriptions, headings, structured data, sitemap and Search Console. Local SEO setup included.
Accessibility
Built and tested against WCAG 2.2 AA. Keyboard and screen reader checks before launch.
Ownership
Your domain, your hosting account, your code. No lock-in contracts.
Plain copy
We help write it, or write it for you. Short sentences, real detail, no buzzwords.
Security
SSL, minimal plugins, updates and backups. Nothing left running that nobody looks after.
08 / Choosing
Comparing web design companies in Suffolk
If you are looking to hire professional web designers in Suffolk, you will find freelancers, small design studios, larger agencies based in Ipswich or Norwich, and national firms that sell over the phone. All of them can create websites. The differences are in who does the work, what is included and what happens after launch.
| Option | Strengths | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance web designer | Direct contact, flexible, often affordable | Capacity, holiday cover, who maintains the site later |
| Small design studio | The people you meet do the work; bespoke design; local knowledge | Make sure the scope and ongoing support are written down |
| Larger agency | Wider teams for branding, marketing and Google Ads | Hand-offs between sales, project managers and web developers |
| National template provider | Low upfront price | Lock-in contracts, shared templates, who owns the domain |
Whoever you choose, ask to see portfolio examples close to your own business, ask who owns the domain and hosting, and ask what the site will cost each year after launch. Our guide to what a website costs in Suffolk sets out the questions in full.
Website design and web development: what is the difference?
Website design covers the page plan, layouts, typography and how a visitor moves through the site. Web development is the build: the code, hosting, forms, integrations and performance. Some web design companies do only the first and pass the build to someone else. We do both, so the person who designed a page is the one who makes it work on a phone.
Branding, ecommerce and hosting
Many small businesses come to us with branding they are happy with: a logo, colours and a name customers know. We work with it. If your branding needs a refresh, we can recommend local graphic designers. For businesses that sell products, our ecommerce work covers online shops on Shopify or WooCommerce. And every site we build can be looked after on our web hosting and maintenance plans, so updates, backups and small changes are handled each month.
Responsive design as standard
Responsive design means one site that adapts to every screen size, from a phone in a site cabin to a large office monitor. For local businesses it matters more than almost anything else, because most local searches happen on phones. Every layout we produce is drawn for a phone first, and tested on real devices before launch.
Beyond Suffolk
Although we are a Suffolk web design studio, plenty of our work reaches into Norfolk, north Essex and Cambridgeshire, including Newmarket, Thetford, Diss, Colchester and the villages around Haverhill. If your business sells into Suffolk from just over the border, we understand the market you are selling into.
What a good brief looks like
You do not need a formal specification to start. A good brief for a web design studio covers who your customers are, what you want more of, what the current site gets wrong, which competitors you rate, and any deadline that matters, such as a trade show or a new premises opening. Bring that to the first call and the rest of the plan follows from it.
09 / Questions
Before you hire a web designer
How much does a website cost?
A small brochure site for a trade or local service usually costs less than a used van and more than a template subscription. A larger site for a manufacturer, with many capability and industry pages, costs more, as does an online shop. We give a fixed quote after the discovery call, broken down by page and feature, so you can see where the money goes.
How long does it take?
Most projects take between four and ten weeks, depending largely on how quickly content and feedback come back. We agree a timeline at the start.
Do you only work in Suffolk?
Most of our clients are in Suffolk, and our local knowledge is part of what we offer. But we also work with businesses in Norfolk, Essex and further afield, especially where they sell into Suffolk.
Can you help with marketing beyond the website?
We focus on the website and the search and tracking setup around it, including Google Business Profile and landing pages for Google Ads. If you need branding, graphic design or a full marketing campaign, we can point you towards good local specialists.
Do you set up Google Business Profile and Search Console?
Yes. The SEO setup in every build includes a review of your business profile, Search Console verification, a sitemap and analytics, so you can see how people find you from the first week.
What do you need from us to get started?
A conversation about your customers, access to your current website and analytics if you have them, and someone who can make decisions. We help with the rest, including the copy if you want us to write it.
Will I be able to update the site myself?
Yes, if you want to. We choose the editing setup around how often you will update the site and who will do it.
